I finally caught up on my feeds last night and came across a few really good articles…

  • Freemium business model case study: AdultFriendFinder ARPU, churn and conversion rates (Andrew Chen)
  • Fantastic post taking a look at AFF’s business metrics and deriving their values using data from the recent IPO filing.  Andrew’s blog is a must read for any web marketing nerd (like myself).

  • Design Decisions: The new Highrise signup chart (Signal vs. Noise)
  • Walk through of the design process/iterations for their new sign up page.  I’ve been through this process so many times, it was great to see how the best in the biz does it.

  • The way the brain buys (The Economist)
  • Discusses the data & psychology behind why grocery stores are laid out the way the are and mentions some new technology being used to learn even more about shoppers.  I did a consulting gig at a large CPG manufacturer a while back and was amazed at how much information they have on their consumers and how well they use it to influence the purchase decision.

  • Malcom Gladwell on meaningful work and curiosity (Signal vs. Noise)
  • “If you are convinced that the work you are doing is meaningful, then curiosity, there’s no cost to it. If you think there’s always got to be a connection between what you put in and what you get out, then of course you’ll run off with a great excitement after an idea that catches your idea.”

A fav restaurant + a fav show

The chef at one of my favorite Seattle restaurants (Sabrina Tinsley @ Osteria La Spiga - love their gnocci) is on one of my favorite shows, Iron Check America, tonight (9pm PST on the Food Network).

She’s up against against Bobby Flay - who I thought would be one of the tougher matchups but apparently has the second worst record among the Iron Chefs.

WTF?

Here are the stats of 4 four NFL QBs…

QB1 - 4009 Yards, 34 TDs, 105.5 QB Rating

QB2 - 4526 Yards, 25 TDs, 86.0 QB Rating

QB3 - 4002 Yards, 27 TDs, 95.0 QB Rating

QB4 - 3472 Yards, 22 TDs, 81.0 QB Rating

Can you guess which 3 QB’s made the Pro Bowl?  What about which one won the NFL MVP?

Seems pretty obvious to me, but maybe you need some more information.  Here are the records of each QB’s team and whether or not they may be playoffs…

QB1 - 8-8; Division Champion

QB2 - 8-8; Didn’t make the playoffs

QB3 - 11-5; Divison Champion

QB4 - 9-7; Didn’t make the playoffs

Now the answer’s really obvious, right?

Not so fast…

QB1 - Philip Rivers, S-O-L

QB2 - Jay Cutler, Pro Bowl

QB3 - Peyton Manning, MVP & Pro Bowl

QB4 - Bret Farve, Pro Bowl

I might be biased, but Rivers got screwed.  He lead the league in TDs by a wide margin - and with 20% fewer attempts then the next closest guy.  He beat Farve head-to-head, was one horrible call away from beating Cutler twice, and lost to Manning on a last second field goal.
